Our musical heroines of the month are the incredible The Blushes. Three girls in pink monastic robes, playing at the intersection of punk and alternative. Their vintage aesthetic evokes a warm nostalgia, while their timely lyrics invite reflection on what matters today.
In our interview with the girls, we talked about the story behind The Blushes and how they developed their signature visual style.

The Blushes' visual identity is built on contrast. On the cover of their single "BFF," we see the girls in plaid dresses with collars and bows in their hair — they're hurling ice cream onto the asphalt with full force. In another series of reels, they appear as women-monks in pink robes. Pink here symbolizes tenderness, submission, and innocence, while the nun figure is associated with humility, tolerance, and servitude. But the moment you turn on the sound, the illusion shatters: a voice singing in a punk manner delivers lyrics that contain not a drop of tolerance, submission, or tenderness. It's precisely this rupture between image and content that's so captivating and stays with you long after.

[reunited by the Goddesses]

The band was founded in 2021 in Los Angeles by three longtime friends — Katie Earl Hogan on drums, Katy Rose on bass, and Lori Dorfman on guitar.

"We grew up together in local theater programs. As young adults, we each went our own creative ways, but the Goddesses brought us back together when COVID hit and thrust us back into each other's lives. Sometimes great things are born from chaos."

In The Blushes' lyrics, the band members regularly address topics that resonate with many women: safety, motherhood, social inequality. In the song "Radical," they sing: "They say that we have dangerous ideas, like kids in schools should get a decent meal." And right after that comes: "My reproductive system wants good healthcare." And all of this is delivered from the kitchen — in the image of a 1950s–60s American housewife. The girls masterfully play with these visual codes and use them to achieve the desired effect.

F: What inspired or surprised you recently?

TB: That women are not required to be small, delicate, quiet, or anything else! We can be loud, feral, messy... anything we want.

TB: Yes! We are fully DIY. We write our own songs, create our own content, plan out our costumes... you name it! Our entire team consists of us three and our producer.
